About this Course
When change requires you to challenge people’s familiar reality, it can be difficult, and sometimes even dangerous work. Whatever the context, whether in the private or the public sector, many will feel threatened as you try to push through major changes. But as a leader you need to find a way to make it work. The practice of adaptive leadership is designed to assist organizations and individuals in dealing with change, thus this course is about helping organisations, communities and societies thrive in a changing world. It provides preliminary concrete steps to move a change initiative forward thereby allowing organizations, individuals and communities to flourish. Through interactive learning, role play and experiential exercises, learners will discern options for practicing leadership from any position in an organization or community.
It presents tools and tactics to lead, stay alive, inspire others and mobilize people to tackle tough problems. It provides ideas and concepts to think deeply and broadly about the concept and practice of leadership, applies theory to the practice of leadership, and provides an opportunity to discuss the various confusions of leadership. This course will introduce learners to core processes in the practice of leadership: diagnosis first and then action; which is about diagnosing what is happening in your organization or community and taking appropriate action to address the problems you have identified. It will define, clarify and help learners understand the relationship among key concepts – leadership, power, authority, management, adaptive challenge, technical challenge, social systems, boundaries etc. When change requires you to challenge people’s familiar reality, it can be difficult, and sometimes even dangerous work.
