Work Ready Africa - Work-Ready Boot Camp

ABOUT COURSE

The Work-Ready Boot Camp is a nine-months intensive training and assessment program with the goal of producing work-ready graduates that have expertise in entrepreneurial leadership, communication skills, project management capabilities and the ability to make data-driven decisions. The WRA curriculum is based on a blended learning system that leans heavily on publicly-available online learning, peer-based learning and is heavily dependent on the use of technology to maximize the efficiency and the effectiveness of the learning process. After the “Work-Ready Boot Camp”, these graduates will gain employment at top companies in Africa, or (if they prefer) pursue independent entrepreneurial business careers.

Why a “Work-Ready Boot Camp”?

In Sierra Leone, where the WRA program will be piloted with the first Work Ready Boot Camp, there is 70% unemployment among youths, and 50% unemployment among youths with an undergraduate degree. At the same time, 90% of company Chief Executives describe talent gaps or skills gaps as the number one issue inhibiting the growth and success of their companies. These two phenomena are caused by a significant skills and capabilities gap that exists between the university graduates and the needs of the employers. Most employers state that the skills that the Youth lack that makes them unemployable are:

  • Entrepreneurial leadership skills (integrity, self-discipline, initiative);
  • Communication (verbal and written English language communication)
  • Project Management skills
  • Data-driven decision-making skills

Fee: Le435,000.00 per person

For many employers, the cost and duration of training these university graduates is prohibitive and it is not their core competency. As a result, the companies make do with limited hiring and simply limit their growth to fit the human capacity that is available to them without the risk of investing significant amounts of money to the vetting, selection, and training of new entrants. For many companies, they face the additional challenge of fearing that significant investment in new entrants, who have little allegiance to the new employer, may be an exercise in frustration with the newly trained workers leaving for a job with another employer.

The Work Ready Boot Camp will solve this challenge for the employers. WRA will train selected graduates using effective and efficient methods that cap the cost of the training for employers to US$1,000 and the duration to nine months. More importantly, the duration does not affect the business of the employer because the prospective employee is not paid until after the training. The employers also have the opportunity to further assess the prospective new employees through a three-month internship program that is part of the 9-month program.

  1. Program Design

The course curriculum and materials have been designed to fit the learning outcomes and skills gaps that have been identified by employers.
The program design emphasizes efficiency and effectiveness in the achievement of the Learning outcomes. The program contains a number of features, each providing significant value to employers looking to find competent workers that will help them to grow their business:

  • Initial competitive screening. The program will have an initial screening process that will ensure that the graduates who enter the program are already in the top half of quality of students in terms of the skills desired.
  • High use of online learning tools. The use of online learning tools and courses is designed to achieve rapid improvement of students’ writing skills and IT skills even as they improve on other skills that are targeted based on the content of the online course. The online programs are also cost-effective, which supports the goal of the program to keep it at an affordable cost for students.
  • High use of peer-learning. Peer learning and peer-teaching are effective learning methodologies that enhance teamwork, leadership skills, and understanding of the material by the students. Students will engage with each other to ensure common understanding of the material and accomplishment of team-based projects.
  • Internship. After six months of intense classroom (mainly online) work, the participants will be sent on internships to employers who will monitor their performance during the internship period.
  • Mentorship. From the fourth month of the program to the eighth month of the program, participants will be assigned to mentors who will provide mentorship in a structured format. The mentors will provide feedback on the participants which will influence the participants’ performance grading.

This cost will cover nine-month training boot camp (including course materials). Participants are expected to provide their own transportation and feeding. Participants are encouraged to use their own laptops or smartphones to do their work; however, this is not mandatory, as WRA will provide computers at the training center for participants to use whenever the training center is open.

Employment Guarantee

Students who graduate from the program with a passing grade will be assured of employment within 3 months after the program or will be refunded the money they paid to participate in the program. The program will ensure that all students who achieve a passing grade (A, B, or C) will be successfully placed at companies at the end of the nine-month program. Students who do not achieve a passing grade (“D”) will be given a certificate of completion of the program but will not be guaranteed employment or given a refund of fees paid at the end of the program.
